Getting personal service from a smaller lender helped Graham and Lorna Rouse from Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, when they drew a blank finding a new mortgage earlier this year.
Lorry driver Graham, 46, says the couple had struggled financially, missing a few payments on other loans.
'We needed to get on to a new, lower mortgage rate to cut our payments and get back on our feet, but our bank's deals were too high and none of the other high street names seemed willing to help,' Graham says.
The couple took advice from Premier Plus Independent Financial Advisers in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. Graham says: 'They said Cambridge Building Society looked at every case on its merits so it was more likely to take us on.'
Having examined their case, Cambridge offered the couple a two-year fixed-rate loan set at 3.89 per cent. Graham says: 'Getting personal service and being treated like an individual made all the difference. It gave us the fresh start we needed.'
